This year’s Wanda Diamond League will now begin in Gateshead on 23rd May following a few minor alterations to the 2021 season calendar. The Wanda Diamond League season opener will be held in the UK for the first time in 2021, with Gateshead stepping in to replace Rabat as the first host city on this year’s circuit, Wanda Diamond League announced this friday.
This means that the season opener will not be Rabat as planned due to the ongoing pandemic. Other changes in the season calender is how Rome's Pietro Mennea Golden Gala will be moved to Florence and Oslo´s Bislett Games are changing competition date to the 1th of July.
Beyond this Wanda Diamond League are planning to offer a full serie where the athletes are competition for a spot in the final and the Diamond Trophy.
Sebastian Coe, Diamond League Chair, sais: “This is an incredibly important year for our athletes as they prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and less than a year later the World Athletics Championships Oregon22. Competition and training are two very different things so the Wanda Diamond League and our other one-day meetings around the world will give athletes the opportunity to qualify for events, earn World Ranking points and prize money and benchmark their performances against the competition they will face in Tokyo and then Oregon in 2022.”
