The successful year continues for the Swede. In Oslo's Diamond League, he broke his own Swedish record for 5000 meters when he clocked 12.50.94, the sixth best time ever by a European.
It's almost becoming a habit now. Andreas Almgren has run six races this year and broken the Swedish record in five of them.
- It's like Christmas Eve every day. I said at the press conference yesterday that I had ten seconds better and now I gained nine of them, says Andreas with a big smile right after the race.
Just like in the race at the Stockholm stadium, however, Almgren did not have a perfect trip. Like then, he was forced to pull his cluster for the last four laps. Even so, he came in at a very fine 12.50.94, a time that places him high up on the list of the best Europeans of all time and ahead of the legendary Mo Farah.
- It's clear that it's big, but then he has six Worlod Championships golds and four Olympic golds more than I have, but it's absolutely big, says Almgren and continues:
- These are times that a few years ago I didn't think were possible.
As early as Sunday, it's time again. Then he runs 3,000 meters at the BAUHAUS-gala and right now there is not much to say that it won't be a Swedish record then.
- It depends on how much I have time to recover, but I am in much better shape now than when I broke the Swedish 3000m record.
However, the goal for Sunday is already clear.
- I want to approach 7.30, he says.
Right now his Swedish record is 7.34, but if he were to get down to those times, it would mean that he would once again be among the five fastest runners in Europe.
However, it is not only at 3000 meters that he thinks he has more in him.
- I find it difficult to see that I would be "peak" now. I think I should be able to improve and then maybe I should be able to come down towards the European record.
