At the European Cup in throwing, which was held in Cyprus in mid-March, Vanessa hit with a new world best of 63.25 when she won the toughest discus competition of the year so far.
She defeated four of the finalists in last year's Olympics. Second place Liliana Cá from Portugal had 62.66.
Vanessa's Swedish record from the 2024 Olympic final is 65.14.
- It is strong to throw just over 63 meters this early in the season, says coach Mats Olsson.
Vanessa Kamga had a nice series with four throws over 60 meters: 59.28 – 60.64 – 57.95 – 61.45 – 63.25 – 62.86.
– World best of the year feels so powerful! I am so proud of the way I compete and stretch myself against such tough competition as this. It was a strong field with five out of twelve girls from the 2024 Olympic final. I think it's cool, Vanessa commented.
The victory in the European Cup was Vanessa's first win in an international championship for seniors.
– It was great from Vanessa. She had a super competition, maybe her best ever, said Mats Olsson.
This year, the World Championships in Tokyo in September are Vanessa's big goal. With 65.14 from last year's Olympic final, she has already passed the tough qualifying limit for the World Championships and thus does not have to chase qualifying results this summer.
Vanessa and Mats will next go to the USA for a training camp, then the first Diamond League competition of the year awaits in Xiamen, China on April 26. Vanessa's invitation to this competition is a result of her breaking into the world elite last year.
– Technically, Vanessa threw well, but there are details to refine, said Mats Olsson, who hopes that Vanessa will get a hit in the BAUHAUS gala at Stockholm Stadium on June 15.
